“I enjoy her humor,” Kalita says. “It’s kind of dark and dry, and similar to my own. The show itself is commentary on crime and infamy, celebrity and Velma, within that, gets to make commentary about what’s going on.”. Velma is in a good position to comment on the story: her role follows the trajectory of the fickleness of fame. At the beginning of the show, she’s in jail on murder charges, but the sensationalism of her story–an apparent crime of passion–seems likely to secure her freedom and a fortune as well. That is, until Roxie arrives in jail, with her own crime story fresher in the headlines. Even Velma’s unscrupulous lawyer, Billy Flynn, played by Willow Glen’s Michael Mulcahy, goes to work for Roxie instead.
