Palmer excels in the traditional media of black-and-white photography, producing lyrical, poetic images. In her “Finding Light” series, which includes 14 works, she pays tribute to the plant world. Her artist’s statement says, “Plants and trees are our fellow beings; fundamentally, they are what we breathe and what we eat. We humans would not have evolved without them.” Most viewers will think — erroneously — that she uses Photoshop to achieve the mysterious quality in these images. Instead, she meticulously assembled each intimate scene for a close-up view with her camera, layering leaves, branches and needles with a translucent sheet that she has manipulated to enhance the otherworldly effect.
